JULIA PEŁKA’S “WOODEATERS” SELECTED FOR THE COMPETITION OF OFF – ODENSE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Julia Pełka’s latest short documentary, "Woodeaters", has been selected for the official documentary competition of OFF – Odense International Film Festival. Produced by Paulina Skibińska of Parallax Film, the film will be presented at one of the most important short film festivals in the world.

OFF – Odense International Film Festival is Denmark’s only short film festival qualifying for the Academy Awards and the European Film Awards. Founded in 1975, it is the oldest film festival in Denmark and one of the key international platforms for short cinema. This year’s edition will take place from 24 to 30 August.

The screening in Odense will mark the international premiere of Woodeaters, following its world premiere at the 66th Krakow Film Festival, which will be held at the turn of May and June.

Woodeaters takes viewers to a Lemko Orthodox church in Poland’s Podkarpacie region, where a quiet yet relentless battle is being waged against insects eating away at the historic wooden structure from within. For the entomologist involved, this is both a scientific challenge and a mission to save cultural heritage. In his fight against the pests, he uses effective but controversial insecticides, including Zyklon B. A substance used during the Second World War for mass extermination is now, paradoxically, helping to preserve a wooden monument and the cultural heritage of an ethnic minority in Poland.

The film’s international festival distribution is handled by KFF Sales.
