THE WAY
POLISH TITLE: DROGA
"They came from a free different parts of the world. They never meet before, they just heard each other. And they started to play the concerts …” – these words open the film and are the only ones that appear in Grzegorz Korczak’s documentary, which redefines the genre in an innovative way, although in keeping with the tradition of a silent movie. The Way presents the meeting of jazzmen from the USA, Brazil and Poland, who not sharing a common language can communicate only by playing together. Black-and-white, grainy pictures together with the music show emotions and experiences which are hard to put into words. Jazz variations are intercut with images without a single sound. Insightful portraits and dense frames are intertwined with fade-outs to black. The film’s polyphony enables the viewer to watch the film with keen senses, and to take a personal journey in a flood of sounds and pictures. Softened means of expression, constituting sort of interludes or pauses, build a space for free interpretation of the film. By using title cards Grzegorz Korczak smartly alludes to the silent film.
